Chris Lary
My work is primarily figurative, exploring portraiture, anatomy and the nuances of human emotion. I seek to capture the character and presence of my subjects, working intuitively to translate both conscious and subconscious elements into a visual language.
I aim to draw the viewer in, inviting engagement not only with the subject, but with the energy of the medium and the process itself. Using mixed media on recycled paper, cardboard and canvas, my materials bring both texture and narrative into the surface.
Everyday moments and human interactions are central to my practice. Through spontaneous line, expressive brushwork and layered textures — often incorporating torn paper and printed fragments — I explore the tension between structure and fluidity.
Defined lines and rigid elements sit against freer gestures, creating rhythm, contrast and emotional intensity within each work.
