RACHELLE BOMBERG
Born in London, Rachelle Bomberg was raised within a deeply creative environment. As the niece of David Bomberg, whose work is held in the Tate Gallery, she was exposed early to both modernist thinking and the traditions of classical art.
A gifted painter and classical dancer, she was offered scholarships in both disciplines, but chose instead to travel, broadening her perspective through international experience. A formative period in South Africa in the 1970s led to her mentorship under Taubie Kushlik and her admission to the Johannesburg College of Art, where she received a rigorous training grounded in both traditional and contemporary practice.
After years of travel, personal evolution, and international exhibitions, Bomberg established her own museum-gallery-studio in Muizenberg, Cape Town. There, she restored and resides in Windermere House, a distinctive 1940s Art Deco building overlooking the Cape coastline.
Her earlier work, shaped by personal and political tensions, has evolved into a more lyrical expression. Today, her paintings are inspired by rhythm, movement, and the shifting moods of nature—light, mist, storm, mountain, and sea—echoing her continued engagement with dance, particularly Flamenco.
