JOE JOUBERT
A largely self-taught artist, I was first introduced to oil painting in 2009, initially focusing on portraiture and the discipline of realism. My practice has since evolved through ongoing exploration and a desire to move beyond familiar boundaries.
In 2016, I joined the South African Society of Arts (SASA), where participation in their annual exhibitions led to recognition, including a Certificate of Commendation in Oils and the Moyra Broom Trophy for Best Oils.
Alongside my practice, I have worked as an art teacher since 2017 — a role that continues to shape and challenge my approach, encouraging greater experimentation and a shift toward a more expressive style.
While grounded in realism, my work explores the interplay of composition, colour harmony and imagination, allowing for greater freedom within the creative process.
I am drawn to the imperfections of both nature and humanity, seeing them not as flaws but as essential truths. Through a surreal visual language, I explore the relationship between humanity and the natural world — where boundaries blur, and new ways of seeing begin to emerge.
Inspired by landscapes both fertile and barren, my work reflects the belief that even within the harshest environments, potential exists. Through this lens, I seek to encourage a deeper awareness of our interconnectedness and the need to live in greater balance with the world around us.
