ANDRE PEYPERS
Zebra studies remain André Peypers’ most recognisable and compelling subject. He is drawn to the way their stripes sculpt the body, and how subtle shifts in posture and gaze reveal distinct moods and personalities. Their instinct to cluster in moments of danger fascinates him — a choreography of unity and self-preservation.
Working on a large scale, often close to life size, Peypers crops and zooms into these formations. At first glance, the eye struggles to settle; as the viewer steps back, the composition unfolds. Negative spaces emerge between grazing forms, creating an almost abstract landscape woven through necks, flanks and faces.
A quiet tension develops between sharp focus and softened silhouettes, producing a rhythmic interplay of clarity and blur. The result is both intimate and expansive — a study of presence, pattern and movement.
