ZIMBABWEAN STONE SCULPTURE

Contemporary Zimbabwean stone sculpture is widely regarded as one of the most significant sculptural movements to emerge from Africa in the 20th century. Its origins trace back to the 1950s, when Frank McEwen, founding Director of the National Gallery of Zimbabwe, initiated a series of experimental workshops. Recognising the raw energy and originality of local artists, he encouraged them to explore stone as a primary medium while fostering a strong sense of individual vision and artistic integrity.

The results were extraordinary. A distinctive sculptural language emerged — deeply rooted in African spirituality, form and symbolism — which quickly gained international recognition. Pioneering artists such as Nicholas Mukomberanwa, Henry Munyaradzi, Bernard Matemera and John Takawira exhibited globally, with works entering major collections across Europe, the United States and beyond.

Today, the movement continues through subsequent generations of sculptors, whose work has become increasingly sought after by collectors. We work closely with established artists from this lineage — individuals who carry forward the authenticity, skill and creative spirit that define this tradition.

For over two decades, we have collaborated with leading Zimbabwean stone sculptors and their representatives. We are pleased to assist collectors in sourcing exceptional works — whether by a specific artist, thematic interest, or simply a piece that resonates on a deeper level.
