David Thorpe is a British-trained painter and illustrator whose career spans fine art and commercial design across the United Kingdom and South Africa. He studied fine art, illustration and graphic design in London, establishing himself in the publishing industry with work for books, magazines and major visual archives.

On returning to South Africa, Thorpe developed a strong painting practice alongside his illustration work, gaining recognition for his technical precision and versatility across oil and watercolour. His career includes significant commissions, notably large-scale works for the Grand West Casino in Cape Town, as well as portrait and landscape commissions for private collectors.

His paintings are distinguished by a refined sensitivity to light, atmosphere and composition, capturing quiet, often overlooked moments with clarity and restraint. Now based in Plettenberg Bay, he continues to paint from his studio, guided by a lifelong commitment to drawing, observation and craftsmanship.
