Thomas van Gylswyk
Thomas van Gylswyk is an artist whose work resists easy definition. His practice has evolved rapidly in recent years, resulting in a distinctive and highly individual visual language.
From an early age, he was driven by a deep curiosity about the world around him — questioning instinctively why certain forms, colours and ideas resonate. This sensitivity led to an exploration of visual elements, particularly colour, and its emotional and psychological impact.
Growing up in South Africa, he spent long periods along the Natal South Coast, where the richness of the natural environment became an early source of inspiration. The dune forests, alive with wildlife and imagination, sparked a love for creating — often painting scenes inhabited by monkeys and imagined figures.
His early development was further shaped through lessons with artists connected to the Everard Read Gallery, introducing him to broader artistic perspectives.
