Helena Jordaan

A largely self-taught artist, I was first introduced to oil painting in 2009, initially focusing on portraiture and the discipline of realism. My practice has since evolved through ongoing exploration and a desire to move beyond familiar boundaries.

In 2016, I joined the South African Society of Arts (SASA), seeking critical engagement and broader context. Participation in their annual exhibitions led to recognition, including a Certificate of Commendation, and the Moyra Broom Trophy for Best Oils.

Alongside my practice, I have worked as an art teacher since 2017 — a role that continues to shape and challenge my approach. This has encouraged greater experimentation, including the use of acrylics, and a shift toward a more expressive style.

While grounded in realism, my work explores the interplay of edges, composition, colour harmony and imagination, allowing for greater freedom within the creative process.
