Skumbuzo Salman

Skumbuzo "Skubalisto" Salman approaches painting as an intuitive conversation between colour, emotion and human experience. Working instinctively rather than to a fixed formula, he uses colour as a language capable of expressing what words often cannot. Each painting develops through a balance of intention and spontaneity, embracing the imperfections and unexpected discoveries that naturally arise during the creative process.

His artistic journey began in childhood, inspired by the memory of a father lost at an early age. Drawing became a way of creating presence from absence, evolving into a lifelong exploration of identity, resilience and transformation.

The figures that inhabit his work are not traditional portraits, but emotional reflections of the human condition, capturing experiences of hope, vulnerability, endurance and change.

A distinctive duality runs throughout Salman's paintings. Beauty and disruption, innocence and experience, humour and melancholy coexist within the same visual space. Influenced by contemporary South African life, African storytelling traditions, graffiti and street culture, his work reflects themes of identity, belonging and renewal.

Rich in colour and symbolism, his paintings invite viewers to find their own stories within the canvas, offering a powerful reminder of humanity's capacity to adapt, endure and begin again.
