The study appears in the Journal of Psychosomatic Medicine. "Death is probably one of the most common things we deal with as humans," said lead author Deborah Rice, Ph.D., associate professor of psychology at UC Davis and a psychologist at the Veterans Affairs Greater Sacramento Health Care System. "We may try to avoid it, but it's still a reality." Many people experience common fears such as fear of falling, fear of spiders or fear of getting cancer. Others may have a fear of flying, driving, operating a heavy machinery or seeing an accident on the road. By contrast, those fears that could potentially lead to a non-fatal event -- such as fear of slipping on ice -- were associated with anxiety and depression, and those fears that could lead to a fatal event were associated with increased suicidal thoughts. "We found that for many fears
